Call on Congress to debate and vote on a new AUMF

On this day in 2001, President George W. Bush signed the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) into law, giving the president far-reaching authority to conduct war against the perpetrators of 9/11.

For eighteen years, our presidents have used this authorization to pursue terrorism without further congressional debate, even as the conflict has evolved and changed.

Any decision to go to war should be made carefully and with deep consideration, and authorization to use force must be carefully crafted to address today’s threats and operational environment.

Join me in calling on Congress to reassert its constitutional role and debate, and vote on, a new AUMF.
