NASHVILLE – U.S. Senate candidate and member of the White House COVID Task Force Bill Hagerty signaled his support of the “antigovernment militia movement” recently posing for a photo with a supporter wearing a Three Percenters t-shirt (available for purchase on their website).

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, “percenterism is one of three core components within the antigovernment militia movement, along with the Oath Keepers and traditional militia groups.” Three Percenters are also identified in the Anti-Defamation League’s index of “extremism, terrorism & bigotry.”

Last month, violence erupted following the peaceful and legal protests about the murder of George Floyd and systemic racism, that according to the Tennessean left “Nashville police [trying] to identify 20-30 people they said hijacked the demonstration and used it ‘as a cover for the destruction they wanted to employ.’”

One shocking crime was captured in real-time of an arsonist setting Nashville’s historic Courthouse on fire, with individuals making white supremacist hand gestures nearby. Nashville Police asked anyone recognizing the individuals to submit tips through a hotline.

Two days later, Nashville Police announced the arrest of Wesley Somers, 25, charging him with arson, aggravated arson, vandalism and disorderly conduct – a development Bill Hagerty celebrated on Twitter amongst a storm of postings against “Antifa.”

“Somers’ arrest has kicked off an online stir,” according to one account, as he appeared to be out of place at a peaceful demonstration against systemic racism. “His tattoos, which appear in photos that have circulated the internet, seem to match those of a shirtless, tattooed protester stoking the fire at the courthouse. A tattoo of three vertical lines on Somers’ right wrist led to speculation that Somers is a member of the Three Percenters, a far-right paramilitary group that employs the roman numeral “III” as an insignia.”

“Bill Hagerty signaling his support of the ‘antigovernment militia’ vote and fanning the flames of hate for his own political gain is disqualifying of anyone seeking public office,” said decorated Iraq war combat veteran James Mackler, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate. “He should disavow extremism, clarify his ‘Tennessee values,’ and immediately apologize to everyone peacefully and legally protesting systemic racism.”
