ICYMI TN-SEN THIS WEEK: UNMASKING A CLEAR CONTRAST

ICYMI TN-SEN THIS WEEK: UNMASKING A CLEAR CONTRAST

For Immediate Release: June 19, 2020

NASHVILLE – Week 20 was another week of stark contrasts in the race for Tennessee’s open U.S. seat. While decorated Iraq war veteran James Mackler spent this week standing with faith leaders protesting against systemic racism, riding with workers fighting for workplace protections and talking about improving veterans care, Bill Hagerty attacked DREAMers, wished for even more judges, and as the general public was barred from the people’s house, stood (maskless) with extremists in the State Legislature

UNMASKING COVID TASK FORCER HAGERTY

As Tennessee hit its highest number of hospitalizations during the coronavirus pandemic and new modeling showed cases could drastically decrease if 80% of Americans wore masks, White House COVID Task Force member Bill Hagerty continued to transmit himself across the state without a face covering – while opining about how he’ll protect our “most vulnerable.” OK!

UNMASKING HAGERTY’S FEE-PRESS

Reporters – want some of Bill Hagerty’s time to answer questions? Donate to his campaign! While Hagerty has tallied a number of no comments from news outlets in and out of Tennessee, he did make time for an interview with his campaign donor Jordan Sekulow. While Team Hagerty managed to weigh in on the White House Press Secretary’s relationship with Domino’s Pizza, Hagerty couldn’t manage to keep a commitment to a primary debate he previously agreed to attention

UNMASKING BILL’S ANTI-CHOICE TAKES

Bill took time out of his busy week hiding from reporters to pen an op-ed about the importance of “standing for the most vulnerable among us.” He took to Twitter to celebrate the Tennessee Legislature’s attack on women’s individual liberties, but he continues to travel the state unmasked, meeting with Tennesseans vulnerable to experiencing complications due to the coronavirus. Refusing to wear a mask intended to protect others isn’t exactly living up to Hagerty’s “standing for the most vulnerable among us” ideal. James Mackler, who will stand up to anti-choice politicians who are working to take away the same individual rights he fought to defend in the courtroom and on the battlefield, has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood Action Fund and NARAL

UNMASKING HAGERTY’S MISPLACED PRIORITIES

Even though granting legal status to DREAMers is supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans, Hagerty scourged the Supreme Court’s decision and promised that as a senator he would partake in the further politicization of our judiciary. Mackler celebrated the decision for the security it affords young people who’ve known no home other than the U.S. On this issue, and so many others, the contrast couldn’t be more clear — Mackler is running to serve all Tennesseans, Hagerty is running to rubber stamp his golden ticket’s extremist agenda.

UNMASKING HAGERTY’S MISPLACED PRIORITIES PART 2

Count Bill Hagerty as another politician more than willing to express vocal support for the military, while saying nothing about his golden ticket stealing money from Fort Campbell to fulfill a campaign promise, lying to servicemembers about pay raises, mocking traumatic brain injury, and nearly cutting National Guard COVID deployments one day before servicemembers would qualify for earned benefits

UNMASKING HAGERTY’S HOSTILITY TO OVERSIGHT

Bill Hagerty, who served in the policy shop of our last one-term president, George H.W. Bush, exposed his hostility to Congressional Oversight this week, stating “when we come to an important policy decision for the United States, I am going to stand behind President Trump … I am not going to disagree.” Hagerty has also been silent on Treasury Secretary Mnuchin’s refusal to adhere to the law and disclose which businesses received emergency funding from taxpayers. His silence is probably astute there considering he’s running television ads paid for by a multi-million dollar loan he got from Pinnacle Partners the same day the CARES Act was signed into law. In contrast, James Mackler’s campaign, fueled by individual donors investing in sending better leadership to Washington, will stand up to anyone when their agenda hurts Tennesseans.

UNMASKING HOSTILITY TO THE HATCH ACT…AGAIN!

You might remember that Salon posited White House Economic Advisor Larry Kudlow may have violated the Hatch Act during his call on behalf of Hagerty where he encouraged listeners to “open your wallets,” for Bill Hagerty. This week he toed the line of encouraging a violation of the Little Hatch Act, posing for a photo with Rep. Andy Holt who shows off a Hagerty campaign sticker inside the people’s Capitol. While elected officials are exempt from the Little Hatch Act, it’s no surprise that Bill continues to blur the lines of official vs. campaign business.

UNMASKING HOSTILITY TO NOT-ALTERNATIVE FACTS

And the plot thickens as Hagerty announced he will hold a campaign call with Kellyanne Conway, who the U.S. Office of Special Counsel recommended she be removed from her post due to repeated violations of the Hatch Act. Will Kellyanne’s campaign call for Hagerty yield another instance the House Oversight Committee can add to their subpoena

UNMASKING NOT-ALTERNATIVE FACTS PART 2

Hagerty doubled down on his self-characterization as a “job creator,” following up last week’s ad. In case you missed it, we spelled out what Hagerty’s job creation initiatives really meant for Tennessee, here’s a quick recap:

FACT: Hagerty made Tennessee the “most dependent state in America for trade with China.”

FACT: Hagerty is on the WH COVID Task Force to rubber stamp whatever he’s told to rubber stamp — which is why the COVID Task Force has invested more than $30k to install him into the Senate.

FACT: Hagerty claims he will fight to bring back the same supply chain his ECD shipped overseas

UNMASKING HAGERTY’S DOG WHISTLES

While Bill Hagerty often complains about Silicon Valley censorship, unlike James Mackler, he was silent on his golden ticket’s campaign ads featuring Nazi symbols this week. Bananagrams fans point out that one cannot spell Hagerty without H-A-T-E.

UNMASKING BILL’S CONNECTION TO FLYNN

Hagerty continues to beat the ‘Obamagate’ drum perhaps to distract from his own connection to General Flynn and the contact he had with a foreign adversary as a private citizen. Earlier this week, former Deputy National Security Adviser KT McFarland endorsed Hagerty’s campaign. You might remember that McFarland’s appointment as Ambassador to Singapore was rejected by the Senate after being accused of misleading lawmakers about her own knowledge of Flynn’s correspondence with Kislyak. Long before McFarland made her way to the Trump White House, she appeared on Bill Hagerty’s Trump Transition Team!

UNMASKING HAGERTY’S PREFERRED PRESIDENTIAL TICKET(S)

Bill Hagerty took time this week to commemorate the 5th anniversary of Trump’s golden escalator basement dissent, neglecting to mention that the “longtime friend and advisor to former presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney” had also made maximum donations to both Jeb Bush (Feb 2015) and Marco Rubio’s (Feb 2016) presidential campaigns before joining the “Trump Train” in September 2016 – 443 days after the escalator ride.

UNMASKING HAGERTY’S SHADOW CAMPAIGN

As Senate Republicans fear the president’s handling of protests, fumbling COVID-19, and a faltering economy have “endangered the GOP’S Senate control,” Bill Hagerty eagerly mimics everything his golden ticket does. As some Senate Republicans risk excommunication from the team for urging constituents to follow CDC guidelines  — also see Tillis, Thom — Bill Hagerty remains steadfast in continuing unmasked in-person campaign events and vouching for an obviously uneven pandemic response

All that to say, there’s a clear contrast in the race for Tennessee’s open U.S. Senate seat. 137 days until Election Day.
