ICYMI TN-SEN THIS WEEK: HAGERTY’S PUZZLING PITCH RUNS COUNTER TO INTERESTS OF TENNESSEANS

NASHVILLE – This proved to be another week of stark contrast in the Volunteer State. While career self-servant Bill Hagerty made clear he will never stand up to Trump, McConnell or any member of the administration, decorated Iraq war veteran James Mackler continued offering Tennesseans his service-oriented approach.

HAGERTY: A BAD ACTOR ALWAYS PLAYING A SUPPORTING ROLE

Whether it be for McConnell, Pompeo, Blackburn or the biggest star of them all, Donald Trump, Hagerty has no problem parroting their ideas regardless of how they might hurt Tennesseans.

That’s right — Trump isn’t Hagerty’s only puppet master. He’s also wholly adopted Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s deeply unpopular opinion that states and cities suffering economically from the COVID-19 pandemic should consider “the bankruptcy route” in a recent op-ed published in the conservative Tennessee Star. All this, despite the fact that 74% of voters say the federal government should not allow states to go bankrupt, his hometown faces a $216 million tax revenue shortfall and financial analysts say the Hagerty-McConnell rejection of federal aid for states “risks causing a depression.” Looks like Bill and Mitch are all in for bailing out Wall Street, but not Main Street.

Knowing that “breaking with the president may be more dangerous than sticking by him,” Hagerty attempted to stay in Trump’s good graces by running his U.S. Senate campaign against…Joe Biden? And in an incredible feat of verbal gymnastics, Hagerty argued, “our American farmers … have borne the brunt of China’s trade retaliation.” Lest we forget who truly began this unilateral trade war without a strategy, Bill.

HAGERTY: NOT AUDITIONING FOR SENATE INTELLIGENCE

While the U.S. Intelligence Community and Dr. Fauci have made clear that COVID-19 is not man-made, Hagerty’s old boss Mike Pompeo (“an honest man”) and Marsha Blackburn fanned those conspiracy flames.

In other news, Hagerty praised twice-plead-guilty-to-treason General Michael Flynn as a “war hero” and called for heads to roll for his unfair “entrapment.” Hey Bill, General Flynn entrapped himself by calling the Russian Ambassador, who was under surveillance, as a private citizen and in doing so, broke the very law prohibiting private citizens from talking with foreign governments.

POINT: TRUMP STILL CAN’T GET IT RIGHT ON COVID

Trump’s coronavirus show continues to be hot and cold: he’s done with press briefings but can’t stay away; he’s disbanding the task force one minute and saying it’ll continue indefinitely the next. While Trump may not go through with disbanding his task force, he continues undermining our pandemic response by burying a detailed CDC report on safely reopening

COUNTERPOINT: HAGERTY: “WE’RE DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT.”

Hagerty has now defended the response of Donald Trump, Jared Kushner, and Gov. Bill Lee. Here are some key facts about each of their responses:

ADDING GAS TO A RAGING FIRE, HE WANTS TO TERMINATE HEALTH CARE

Just two days ago, Trump said in the Oval Office, “we want to terminate health care,” in the middle of a pandemic that has claimed more American lives than Vietnam.

NO NEED TO SPEND CONGRESSIONALLY AUTHORIZED FUNDING HERE

Reviving the move perfected in their Ukranian diplomacy, the Trump Administration was already behind/holding-up payments to the World Health Organization long before he “cut them off.” And what does Hagerty call habitually ignoring laws passed by Congress? A “Great move.” All in all, it’s a very solid audition for Hagerty to one day provide the only-GOP oversight deemed acceptable by Trump. Just like the Founders drew it up.

REGULATORS: MOUNT UP

With a sweetheart loan that far exceeds the amount small businesses were able to seek in emergency aid, Hagerty’s banking friends hope to have effectively bought their future regulator. If that sounds familiar, it’s the same move that just cost another U.S. Senator a committee assignment

In other William Francis Hagerty IV conflict of interest news, Bill continues to tout his role as a “thought leader” on the Great American Economic Revival Council but remains silent on who he’s meeting with and how this service is benefitting his campaign. Spoiler: he’s already raked in $30k from the group and $200k from corporate PACs

MACKLER CONTINUES TO MAKE HIS PITCH TO TENNESSEANS

While Hagerty appendages himself to McConell’s out-of-touch agenda, ignoring the needs of Tennesseans, James Mackler asked Nashville Central Labor Council President Vonda McDaniel what bankruptcy would do to our state and local economies

MUST SEE BILL TV THURSDAY

Looks like Hagerty’s #TBTrump was not greenlit for subsequent seasons, so might we suggest listening to an episode of ProPublica’s TRUMP, INC about Bill Hagerty and his max-out donor/gambling-expert Joseph Schmelzeis working to make a Japanese casino happen for GOP mega-donor Sheldon Adelson from the U.S. Embassy

… or perhaps jigsaw puzzles are more your thing!

179 days until Election Day.
