ICYMI TN-SEN THIS WEEK: HAGERTY WANTS MASK-FREE MILITARIZED STREETS AS COMBAT VETERAN MACKLER SPEAKS OUT AGAINST INSURRECTION ACT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 5, 2020

NASHVILLE – The race for Tennessee’s open U.S. Senate seat continues to offer stark contrasts with Bill Hagerty, a member of the White House COVID Task Force, covering Tennessee without covering his face, calling for the militarization of civilian streets, and decorated combat veteran James Mackler making his case to serve all Tennesseans in public (at safe distances), and virtually

UNMASKING BILL

After Bill’s White House COVID Task Force fundraising activities were unmasked by national news, he sent himself to meet Tennesseans, sans mask, in Clarksville and Springfield. For reference, the CDC guidelines for public gatherings released by the same White House where Bill serves on the COVID Task Force, recommends cancelling gatherings where “older adults and persons with severe pre-existing health conditions are thought to be at increased risk,” will be in “close contact (within 6 feet),” and taking into account “the level of transmission in your local community.” Remember Bill, wearing a mask isn’t about you, it’s about preventing you from making other people sick (h/t to Hagerty donor TN Rep. Thomas Richard “Rick” Tillis). His brother, North Carolina U.S. Senator Thomas Roland “Thom” Tillis, offered non-mask wearers like Hagerty some advice: “I hope you’re tested daily, I hope you’re an epidemiologist, I hope you’re a scientist, because only with that experience can you possibly think that it’s safe to go out without a mask.”

Final tally for/against masks: Thomas Tillis 2, Bill Hagerty 0.

UNMASKING BILL’S DISREGARD FOR THE RULE OF LAW

Bill unmasked his disdain for the Constitution and the rule of law this week, advising President Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act and put the full force of the U.S. Military on civilian streets to stop Americans from exercising their freedom of speech protesting systemic racism and the murder of George Floyd. Decorated veteran James Mackler noted putting “the full force of the U.S. Military on civilian streets makes as much sense as defunding the World Health Organization during a pandemic.”

While Bill hoped to unmask Antifa violence, a man connected to “a far-right paramilitary group” was arrested for setting Nashville’s Courthouse on fire. The White House was also forced to “Retract Claim Viral Videos Prove Antifa Is Plotting Violence,” as “3 men with ties to right-wing extremists plotted to terrorize Vegas protests.” A leaked FBI memo found “no intelligence indicating Antifa involvement” though that has not stopped Bill from giving the idea his full Obamagate style effort and using it to build his email database.

No word if Hagerty’s concerns about violence were eased by former Defense Secretary General James Mattis, once the crown jewel of Hagerty’s Trump Transition Team appointments, who asserted “we do not need to militarize our response to protests. We need to unite around a common purpose. And it starts by guaranteeing that all of us are equal before the law.”

UNMASKING BILL’S DISDAIN TOWARDS A FREE PRESS

What about tear gassing peacefully gathered Americans 30 minutes before curfew to stage a photo op, Bill? No comment on that — it’s almost as if he’s already a Republican senator. Hagerty also offered nothing on Mattis’ opinion that Hagerty’s golden ticket to the U.S. Senate was making a “mockery of our Constitution.” These days Bill only talks to OANN, as he collects “no comments” in the Knoxville News Sentinel, Tennessee Lookout, and Salon

UNMASKING MORE INSIDE INFO FOR CASH

Unmasked White House COVID Task Forcer Bill Hagerty cannot help himself from trading inside information all Tennesseans need for campaign cash. Special guest this week was Mississippi U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, who isn’t exactly helping upgrade the “company Hagerty keeps” department. We’re looking at you Art Laffer

UNMASKING MICHAEL FLYNN

In a news dump last Friday, the White House released additional transcripts of Michael Flynn’s communications with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak weeks before Michael Flynn would be elevated from private citizen to White House National Security Advisor. For those keeping score, Flynn’s communications were captured because of on-going surveillance of Kislyak’s phone, and they show private-citizen Flynn violating the Logan Act, which “criminalizes negotiation by unauthorized American citizens with foreign governments having a dispute with the United States.” Bill Hagerty calls Flynn an exonerated hero, and that’s it. When asked about Flynn in his Senate confirmation hearing, Hagerty repeatedly answered “in light of the confidentiality interests that attach to executive branch decision making, I am unable to answer this question further.”

NOT YET UNMASKED: WHETHER OR NOT HAGERTY WAS ON POMPEO’S  “MADISON DINNER” GUEST LIST

“Dozens of GOP donors invited to Pompeo’s taxpayer-funded ‘Madison Dinners,’” headlined a report this week from NBC News. “Pompeo had held some two dozen of the dinners at the State Department,” and “the heavy concentration of Republican donors and power brokers who were invited or attended marks a significant departure from the practice of past secretaries of state.” No word yet if Bill Hagerty, a bundler for Republican presidential nominees Mitt Romney and Donald Trump, was one of the “dozens of GOP donors” on the 360-person guest list. Even if he were asked about the dinners, it stands to track Hagerty would add one more “no comment” to his collection.

CONTINUE THE WINNING STREAK

Now that Trump has built the wall Hagerty has repeatedly called for, Hagerty tossed another idea into the White House suggestion box, offering Nashville as a replacement location for the now in-limbo GOP Convention. Team Hagerty posted a curious meme from the Hunger Games offering Tennessee to “volunteer as tribute” for the event moved from Charlotte, NC in part due to disagreements on protocols protecting public health.

TEAM MACKLER KEEPS GROWING

On the week a judge ruled Tennessee must let all voters apply for mail ballots, leading voting rights organization, Let America Vote endorsed James as the best choice for Tennessee’s open U.S. Senate seat. The Forward caught up with James and his wife Rabbi Mackler to talk about what drives them to serve. James also showed himself to be the best candidate at a candidate forum sponsored by Indivisible and the TN Holler. And, if looking tough is what’s keeping Bill Hagerty from wearing a mask, this week James jumped on his Harley to speak with voters (at a safe distance) in Columbia, making it clear that a motorcycle helmet can do the trick

On a more somber note, we’d like to acknowledge the murder of George Floyd, observe Breonna Taylor’s 27th birthday, note the passing of Coach Majors, as well as the 408 Tennesseans who have been lost to the pandemic and our nation’s death count surpassing 110,000 Americans lost. Stay safe.

151 days until Election Day.
