ICYMI TN-SEN THIS WEEK: HAGERTY SILENT ON ALL THE WRONG THINGS, TWEETING FROM THE ROOFTOPS ABOUT #OBAMAGATE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 22, 2020

NASHVILLE – As U.S. Senate candidate Bill Hagerty remained silent on a series of cover-ups by his former boss Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, decorated Iraq War combat veteran James Mackler, candidate for U.S. Senate, remained focused on listening directly to Tennesseans about what they need and are not getting from Washington.

A CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK

Hagerty and his former boss Mike Pompeo are both very fond of rubbing elbows with big Republican donors to advance their personal political ambitions and fundraising on taxpayers’ time. For Hagerty, it’s raking in thousands from the White House COVID-19 Task Force and trading inside information for campaign donations. Pompeo prefers “elite” dinners named after a Secretary of State who later became President (no wonder that Kansas Senate run is beneath him).

HAGERTY’S SILENCE SPEAKS VOLUMES

Other than defending Pompeo from the Chinese Communist Party, Hagerty hasn’t done anything to defend or denounce his political ally since reports emerged that Pompeo ordered the firing of IG Steve Linick because of his State Department investigations of selling arms to Saudis over bipartisan Congressional objections, probing the protocol office, hosting elite dinners on taxpayers’ dime, and whether his State Department staff were made to conduct personal errands. And about those dinners — with a full guest list of 500, what are the odds that Bill & Chrissy Hagerty were invited to and/or attended one or more of the Madison dinners?

HAGERTY ATTACKS CHINA TO DISTRACT FROM TRUMP’S RECORD…

Following in Marsha Blackburn’s footsteps, Hagerty has been a loyal foot soldier attacking China and the WHO to shield his commander from blame. This week he put out a video that exceeded two minutes detailing the relationship between the head of the WHO and China. If that sounds familiar, it is, as it’s the main play in the NRSC’s Senate Candidate Playbook

…OR TO DISTRACT FROM HIS OWN?

Tough talk is probably not going to be enough to change the fact that Hagerty’s tenure as head of Tennessee Economic and Community Development (EDC) department made Tennessee the “top China trader.” Put another way, Hagerty made Tennessee the most dependent state in America for trade with China, which is why JP Morgan rated Tennessee as the hardest hit in the entire United States from Trump’s trade war of choice. But what say Hagerty? He’ll stand with Trump to hold accountable the very country he made Tennessee most dependent upon for trade. OK!

**RECORD SCRATCH**

Beyond tough talk, Hagerty’s main political angle from COVID-19 is all about bringing back the same supply chain his EDC shipped overseas

This week he took time lauding Ivanka Trump as “a leader in growing our nation’s work force,” ignoring a key report during his Embassy stay in Asia that Ms. Trump received 16 Chinese patents

But who are we kidding? Even if he did remember news of Ivanka’s patent spree, he’d probably just consider it to be fake news as he did another article about Ms. Trump’s big brother and top Hagerty campaign surrogate (that’s why they need him in the Senate!)

ALTERNATIVE FACTS

With new analysis out showing that 36,000 American lives could have been saved had sheltering been adopted just one week earlier, COVID-19 Task Forcer Bill Hagerty again asserts they’ve done a “great job” with a “swift, efficient” response. One wonders how football fan Hagerty enjoys watching his leader’s swift/efficient moving of the goalposts on an “acceptable” number of fatalities. We’ve already lost 90,000 Americans and this week we were mansplained to that 200,000 projected fatalities meant they’ve “done a very good job.” Paging Doctor Manny — is earning this president’s “complete and total endorsement” worth it?

PROTECT AND DEFEND … DONALD TRUMP?

Hagerty jumped at the opportunity to praise the troops and their Commander-in-Chief on National Armed Forces Day, but said nothing when their Commander-in-Chief plotted to cut National Guard deployments ONE DAY before they could receive earned benefits. Guess that’s what doing “a very good job” will get you these days. Time will tell if there’s an appetite for electing another elected official who says the right things about supporting the troops, and in turn does nothing in the face of attacks on them.

Monday is Memorial Day. It’s a somber day to commemorate those who have died in military service. Yesterday, Bill Hagerty issued a checklist to support veterans and the first priority is to protect Fort Campbell (we agree). However, Hagerty was silent when Trump seized $63 million marked for Fort Campbell to fund his border wall

HAGERTY RACKS UP NO COMMENTS WHILE MACKLER KEEPS SHOWING HOW HE’LL SERVE ALL TENNESSEANS IN THE U.S. SENATE

While James Mackler spent his week talking with David Plazas for his Tennessee Voices videocast, offering his own questions for Tennessee Valley Authority nominees, meeting Alzheimer advocates, and continuing to make his case to Tennesseans, Bill Hagerty followed his leader, “unmasking” the very CDC guidelines the COVID-19 Task Force sought to bury. Hagerty also made time for OANN while collecting “no comments” from Tennessee outlets like the Knoxville News Sentinel and the Tennessee Lookout quicker than he’s collecting corporate PAC checks.

NEW PROGRAMMING PITCH?

Since Team Hagerty’s #TBTrump is no longer playing in a mancave near you, we offer a news series idea: Trump Transition Team Thursday. This programing will give Hagerty ample opportunity to highlight all the “best and most serious people” he installed into the Trump cabinet before being shipped overseas. This week’s Pompeo coverage included a handy checklist:

165 days until Election Day.
